Under the leadership of Director Lidiya Lund, M.D., Ph.D., CBLPath's Department of Breast Pathology is staffed with board certified pathologists and cytopathologists specializing in breast pathology with the training, expertise and experience to ensure the most accurate diagnoses. Our pathologists are not only today's leaders but also tomorrow's pioneers. We have worked hard to take the industry lead. We will work even harder to maintain it.

Carlos D. Urmacher, M.D., FCAP, FASCP

Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Carlos Urmacher is board certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology. After earning his M.D. degree from the University of Venezuela, Dr. Urmacher completed his pathology residency at Mount Sinai Hospital where he was Chief Resident. Subsequently, he completed his fellowship in surgical pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he was Chief Fellow.  Dr. Urmacher specialized in oncologic and breast pathology as a member of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center attending staff for 13 years and for an additional nine years while on staff at North Shore University Hospital in New York. Dr. Urmacher has received numerous awards and has published more than 80 articles as well as six book chapters and monographs that have included such topics as stage II breast cancer and myofibroblastoma of the breast. He also served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Surgical Pathology. As a former regional course director for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Dr. Urmacher presented regularly on breast pathology and in particular on angiosarcomas of the breast. In addition, he has attended numerous courses on breast pathology at both Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Harvard Medical School as well as those offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Dr. Urmacher is an active member in the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the New York Pathological Society and numerous other professional societies.  Dr. Urmacher was recently giving the honor of distinguished visitor professor in Pathology by Johns Hopkins.

Lidiya Lund, M.D., Ph.D.

Director of Breast Pathology

Dr. Lidiya Lund is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. She received her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Lviv  National Medical University in Lviv, Ukraine, where she advanced to the position of Associate Professor at the Department of Pathology.  After coming to the USA Dr. Lund completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center, University Hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She then did a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr.Lund launched her career in the US as an Attending Pathologist at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and then joined Pathology Department of St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center, University Hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, first as an Associate Attending Pathologist and Pathology Consultant for the Continuum Hospitals in New York, NY and then as Director of Anatomic Pathology at St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center. She has more than 25 years of experience in general pathology and breast pathology. Dr. Lund has received several honors for her scientific accomplishments in her native Ukraine, authored a monograph and multiple articles and lectured extensively in the United States and overseas. She is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.

Department Pathologists:

Maryam Bakhshandeh, M.D.

Dr. Maryam Bakhshandeh is board certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology. She received her M.D. degree from Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran. Dr. Bakhshandeh completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Saint Barnabas Health Care System Integrated Residency Program in Livingston, New Jersey with elective rotations in dermatopathology at both the Mount Sinai Hospital and the Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology in New York City. Subsequently, she completed a two-year fellowship in breast pathology at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center under world renowned breast pathologist Dr. Shahla Masood combined with a breast research at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She is actively involved in breast cancer research and has published several articles on breast disease in peer-reviewed journals including The Journal of the American Medical Association, The Breast Journal and Diagnostic Cytopathology. Additionally, she has presented on breast diseases as a breast pathology expert in a panel discussion at the annual meetings of the National Consortium of Breast Centers (NCBC), and presented at the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and the American Society of Cytopathology. Dr. Bakhshandeh is a member of the American Society of Breast Disease, National Consortium of Breast Centers, International Society of Breast Pathology, World Society for Breast Health, College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Magalis Vuolo, M.D.

Dr. Magalis Vuolo is board certified in anatomic pathology and cytopathology by the American Board of Pathology. She received her M.D. degree as an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. Subsequently, Dr. Vuolo completed her residency in anatomic pathology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center where she was Chief Resident and the recipient of the Irving Ratner Award for excellence in pathology. Following her residency, Dr. Vuolo completed her fellowship in breast pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center under world renowned breast pathologist Dr. Paul Peter Rosen. She then completed an American Cancer Society Fellowship in cytopathology, with an emphasis in fine needle aspiration, under world renowned cytopathologists Dr. Leopold G. Koss and Dr. Mark Suhrland. Prior to her arrival at CBLPath, Dr. Vuolo served as Assistant Professor of Pathology and Attending Pathologist at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center where she was Co-director of the Reproductive Systems and Human Sexuality Course and very active in the pathology residency and cytopathology fellowship training programs and house staff conferences. She has given numerous lectures on breast diseases and has published several articles on the subject in peer-reviewed journals including The American Journal of Pathology, Acta Cytologica, and Modern Pathology among others. Dr. Vuolo is a member of the College of American Pathologists, the American Society of Cytopathology, and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
